New Implant Technology
Presbyopia-Correcting Implants
In the past, life without reading glasses or bifocals was not an option for most cataract patients. Now patients have the option of choosing the ReStor, ReZoom or Crystalens intraocular lenses which have the unique capability of providing you with quality vision throughout the entire visual spectrum, near through distance. These lenses are referred to as “presbyopia-correcting” implants. Hill Country Eye Center is one of the few offices in Austin to offer all of these options, which can be tailored for the individual looking for independence from reading glasses or bifocals.
The ReSTOR intraocular lens uses diffraction technology to focus distant, intermediate and near images on the retina at the same time. Diffraction involves the bending or spreading of light to multiple focal points as it passes through the lens. With the ReSTOR lens, the center of the lens surface consists of an apodized diffractive optic. This means that the series of tiny steps in that center area work together to focus light for near vision. The ReSTOR lens is an excellent option for those patients who enjoy their distance vision, yet perform many daily activities at an “up close” distance, as well.
The ReZOOM intraocular lens uses refraction technology to produce multifocal images on the retina, using five alternating rings of different focusing powers. Like the ReSTOR lens, it provides distant, intermediate and near images simultaneously. However, the ReZoom lens may be a better option for those patients who rely more on their intermediate vision needs, such as computer work, since this lens seems to perform especially well at this focal length.

The Crystalens
The Crystalens intraocular lens is an accommodative lens which uses the focusing muscles in the eye to move it forwards and backwards, creating near, intermediate and distant focus points. This may be a better option for those patients who enjoy sharper night vision, since this lens is not dependent on the dilation of the pupil.
Astigmatism Correcting Implants
If you have astigmatism and cataracts, we may recommend another advanced lens called the AcrySof® Toric lens. It’s the first IOL that treats preexisting astigmatism at the same time it corrects cataracts, so you don’t have to undergo two separate procedures. You will also enjoy improved quality distance vision
The AcrySof® Toric Lens
While none of these lenses are perfect, they are exciting options for the discriminating patient who is looking for freedom from their glasses or contact lenses. Medicare and private insurance companies do not consider the extra expense of these lenses to be a covered service. This new technology falls under the category of refractive surgery, thus patients are responsible for the extra costs associated with implanting the Presbyopia-Correcting lenses.
Vision with these lenses is often best if the respective lenses are placed in both eyes. Not all patients are good candidates for Presbyopia-Correcting Implants. Consultation with either Dr. Restivo or Dr. Jayawant will help you determine which lens is the best choice for you.
